Access to clean drinking water is a major challenge in the rural areas of Ethiopia. According to the World Health Organization, only a small portion of the rural population has access to safe drinking water. A lack of clean water leads to serious health problems, such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
The Wondem Foundation had originally planned to construct 10 water wells in Kobastil and surrounding villages. Due to international crises, economic instability, and funding problems, the project was adjusted. Ultimately, 6 water wells were realized in collaboration with local communities and water experts.
These water wells now provide approximately 2,500 people with clean and safe drinking water. In addition, about 6,000 animals can make use of special watering holes, and water is also used for irrigating agricultural land in four areas.
The project has a clear positive impact on the community. Better access to clean water contributes to improved health, fewer diseases, and more economic opportunities for families. As a result, children can attend school more often and have to take on fewer household chores. In addition to the construction of the water sources, the Wondem Foundation has also invested in training and awareness. Local technicians and community members have been trained in water management and maintenance, and villagers have received education on hygiene and the importance of clean water.
Thanks to this approach, Kobastil and the surrounding villages now have sustainable water supplies that contribute to health, food security, and a better future for the community.
